Project Description

After decades of radio silence and their mother’s recent suicide,
family bankruptcy conspires to reunite estranged and wildly
incompatible sisters as they face their egomaniacal art father’s
terminal prognosis.

Fiona, committed to keeping up her cheerful traditional housewife appearances, is a direct product of her pill-popping, born-again Christian mother who reinvented herself to fit into a conservative midwestern lifestyle after fleeing the evils of Hollywood, and her alcoholic husband’s questionable philosophies on sex and freedom. And Freya, a natural born artist and daddy’s girl, who, however promising her own career, hasn’t been able to leave the nest and step out from under her father’s shadow. The film begins when Fiona unexpectedly arrives at Freya and her father’s doorstep to sell the family home before the bank can get to it. Only then does Fiona learn that her dad is dying and her sister’s life is, in her opinion, out of control. Against their wishes, Fiona is compelled to stay. Mirroring an absurd level of denial and delusion over the course of a few days together, the three of them undergo a series of alchemical revelations that unravel their twisted narratives. Their lives are no less tragic but finally, they know love.

Written & Directed by Sarah Carter

Collaboration Story

As a team, Sarah Carter, Erin Hammond, and Ciera Danielle conceived a story exploring the impact of shared trauma and the transformative power of love and forgiveness in reuniting estranged families.

Erin Hammond (Freya) and Ciera Danielle (Fiona) approached Sarah Carter with an inspiring proposal. Having crossed paths with Erin during a screenplay workshop, Sarah was intrigued by their shared passion. Despite initial uncertainties, Sarah was captivated by their commitment and unique synergy. Drawn by their deep faith and the prospect of infusing prayer into her creative journey, Sarah embraced the opportunity to collaborate on a feature film, recognizing the potential to craft something truly remarkable together.

Philippe Caland, our lead actor, joined the project amidst his own grief after losing his mother, the renowned painter Huguette Caland. Our journey began in Philippe's Venice Beach home, a symbolic setting steeped in artistic heritage. It was designed by his mother at the inception of the Los Angeles art scene which informed the new age bohemian world of the film.

Midway through filming, the global pandemic halted our progress, prompting deep reflection on values and unity amid adversity. This theme of art, humanity, and reconciliation amidst differences resonates throughout the film.

Inspired by the devout Christian beliefs of Erin and Ciera, director Sarah delves into the dichotomy between the artist's path and religious devotion, exploring their shared quest for a deeper connection with God while navigating the potential pitfalls of both paths.

Amidst the writing journey, the narrative evolved to focus on embracing our differences, challenging beliefs, and fostering peace within relationships, reflecting the complexities of our times and personal struggles.

"In Her Name" proved to be a profoundly healing and prophetic tale, particularly poignant for director Sarah following the loss of her brother to addiction post-filming. This experience heightened the film's intimate portrayal of familial grief and discord, emphasizing the need for understanding and acceptance.

Sarah's post-production phase was deeply influenced by her newfound perspective on love and truth emerging from pain. Recognizing the film's potential to incite profound change and promote radical forgiveness and love, she viewed the project as a transformative vehicle for shifting perspectives and opening hearts on a broader scale.

In essence, the creative journey behind "In Her Name" symbolized a reunion with the enigmatic forces of life—a prayer answered, a liberation of self and spirit, a testament to faith in the unknown, and a celebration of unconditional love amidst life's trials and differences.

Death and grieving illuminate the essence of life, transcending materiality to reveal the spirit within. Sarah aimed to capture this profound truth, leading to a deeper self-awareness for herself and her collaborators as artists and individuals. Despite the weighty themes, she infused the film with a light-hearted and meditative tone, blending sorrow with humor to engage viewers emotionally. Laughter threaded through the filmmaking process, perhaps serving as the key to the story's enduring resonance for Sarah, Erin, and Ciera.

Collaborators

  • erin hammond

Erin Hammond stars in In Her Name as Freya, a natural born artist and daddy’s girl, who, however promising her own career, hasn’t been able to leave the nest and step out from under her father’s shadow. Behind the scenes, Erin was one of the driving forces toward the inception of the film. She came to Sarah and asked if she would be willing to direct a film for her and her friend, Ciera, to star in, leading to the film you know today as In Her Name. Erin continued to pour herself into the film through her role as Art Director, curating a selection of her own paintings to be used throughout the film. Erin is a leader, a producer and a deeply committed artist. We could not be more grateful for her and her beautiful performance as Freya.

  • Ciera Danielle

Ciera Danielle stars in In Her Name as Fiona, a cheerful traditional housewife who was whisked away to the midwest by her pill-popping, born-again Christian mother as a child following her parents divorce. It was Ciera and Erin Hammond who originally came to Sarah with the idea for the film, and the three of them worked together to build In Her Name. Ciera worked on the project as both an actress and a producer, and we could not have done it without her.

  • Philippe Caland

Philippe Caland stars in In Her Name as Marv, an egomaniacal, formly-important-artist whose terminal prognosis brings his two estranged daughters back together. The film is strongly inspired by Philippe’s own mother, Huguette Caland, an abstract artist whose work reflects the feminine force of the film, and the art world its set it. Philippe’s leadership shined throughout the filmmaking process as a producer helping to shape the world he had grown up in. Philippe is a writer/director, who is all too humble about is extraordinary talent as an actor. We were lucky to have captured his gift. Philippe’s influence on set was undeniable. His performance in In Her Name is masterful and one of his only outside of his own productions. He won for BEST ACTOR on the festival circuit more than once.

  • Nyambi Nyambi

Nyambi Nyambi stars in In Her Name as Judah, Freya’s partner whose loyalty Freya begins to question. Nyambi has had a robust career as an actor, performing as a series regular on Mike and Molly, The Good Fight, and most recently on Night Court. He won us an award for BEST PERFORMANCE at DTLA Film Festival on the festival circuit. What an absolute joy to have his loving spirit grace the film.

  • James Aaron Oliver

James Aaron Oliver stars in In Her Name as Peter, a protege of Marv’s who takes an interest in Fiona. He has been working professionally as an actor for over 20 years in projects like Frasier, 24, and Our Fathers. In addition to acting, James has worked as a diplomatic liaison traveling extensively through Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. A dear friend and invaluable member of the creative team, James travelled extensively with Sarah throughout the festival circuit offering insight, support, and tremendous sensitivity connecting dots throughout the journey deepening and expanding the impact of the film. As a writer/actor/producer with BLKBRD FILMS, his film Lucy is a must see.

  • Cynthia Bravo

Cynthia Bravo is the Unit Production Manager and Line Producer on In Her Name. Cynthia has worked as a producer on over 30 projects throughout her career. We are so lucky to have her as part of the fabric of this company. The way she navigated production through the pandemic and came up with creative solutions to every problem was invaluable. As a mother of two young children and a passionate artist herself, we couldn’t have found a better producer to keep the days rolling and our spirits in check through an incredibly emotional and unpredictable shoot.

  • Kevin Barth

Kevin Barth is the editor of In Her Name and associate producer on post production with Bartholomew Clever. He is a multi Emmy award winning editor, writer/director, musician, and confirmed cinephile. He was first nominated for an Emmy for his work on “Tom vs. Time” and “Shut Up and Dribble”, and has given his talents to over 30 top tier projects over the past 15 years. His written and directed debut feature-film, A Pity, was produced in part by Cheshire Moon Productions and had a successful international run on the festival circuit. As Sarah’s husband he, of course, means much more than words could possibly describe to the success of In Her Name.

  • Iain Trimble

Iain Trimble is the cinematographer for In Her Name. He has worked on incredible projects including Andrew Dominik’s Blonde, music videos with Miley Cyrus, and The Gridiron, where he won an Emmy. When we met him in Arkansas while working on A Pity we knew we had struck gold. His passion and perfectionism gave us absolute confidence the vision would be executed with excellence and artistry. Nobody sees In Her Name without remarking on its beauty. It will be great to have Iain there to receive the praise he’s been getting on the festival circuit first hand and for him to be able to tell his side of the making of story.

  • Alex Ebert’s

Alex Ebert’s song “Truth” opens In Her Name. His music, lyrics, and philosophy have been among the most influential throughout the process of writing and producing the film. It is thanks to Alex’s friendship with James Aaron Oliver that Sarah was able to reach out and ask for what would have been financially impossible had it not been for Alex’s humanity, generosity, and belief in the film. Grammy award-winning musician, singer-songwriter, and composer, Alex’s career has spanned over 20 years, from the highly successful band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes to the solo career that spawned “Truth”. His composition has expanded to the stage, leading to a Tony nomination for Best Original Score. We are so grateful Alex’s beautiful music sets the stage for our film.

  • Adam Petrishin

Adam Petrishin is a photographer, filmmaker, and editor. As the additional camera and behind the scenes photographer for In Her Name he captured the spirit running beneath the surface without fail. Adam has been integral to the Cheshire Moon Production family from inception. Included in the DVD and Blu Ray, there will be a making of documentary edited by Adam featuring his beautiful footage.

  • Ali Helnwein

Ali Helnwein is the composer for In Her Name and an absolute genius. Ali has had a robust career as an LA-based composer who has worked on multiple Emmy and Grammy winning projects. Films he's scored have gone to festivals ranging from Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, TIFF, and more, including projects for Netflix, HBO and other platforms. In his earlier days he founded the Traction Avenue Chamber Orchestra, which become known for showing up in places where one normally wouldn’t expect an orchestra, performing in places such as a skatepark, a Chinatown Alley, the rooftop of the Standard, etc. Aside from his own orchestra, he has worked with many other orchestras across the U.S. and around the World. In many ways, his score defines our film.

  • Antoinette Dormer

Antoinette Dormer was so much more than the 2nd AD on In Her Name. As one of the many multi-hyphenate artists on our set, mother/actor/writer/director/producer, she wore many hats playing a fun role in front of the camera and leading the troops behind. She is a true partner of Cheshire Moon Productions and on an exciting path with her own projects at Divine and Align Media.
